But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
I couldn’t help but think of this verse as I was peeling “bad” looking apples when making applesauce. Many were small, misshapen and scarred. However, once peeled, they were beautiful inside and made delicious applesauce.
Society today places much value on outward appearance. But just like the apples, our true value is what’s in our heart, not how we look on the outside. God sees and judges us by our faith and inner character. Many of us spend lots of time and money to make ourselves “look good” on the outside, when instead we should be spending time developing our inner character. Today I need to stop and reflect on what my heart really looks like and what steps I need to take to improve my heart’s attitude.
