Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV)
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Proverbs 10:9 (NIV)
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
This time of year we hear a lot about setting new goals and making lifestyle changes. It’s an opportunity for a fresh start. While this is admirable, I am challenging myself (and hopefully you) to ask the question: “Are these goals and lifestyle changes I want to make convictions or good intentions?” I believe convictions come from deep within the heart (from God), while good intentions are more superficial and an act of “I can do this on my own”. If I am really honest with myself, far too many times the changes I desire to make (more time studying God’s word; a deeper prayer life; be a better wife, mom, grandma; get more physically fit; spend less on unneeded purchases; use my time wisely) are only good intentions. Let’s be real, how many times have I set unrealistic goals for myself and failed within a few weeks. For me, I need to do a deep analysis of my heart and ask God for His help in the changes I strive to make (a change from the inside out). And then, I need to work heartily at making these changes (realistic changes).
I love how this verse in Colossians says “Whatever you do, work heartily….”. That means everything! My spiritual life, my physical body, my family and everything God has given me to care for.
This year, my desire is to work heartily unto the Lord and live a life filled with integrity. I want my walk and talk to be consistent with God’s word. Will you join me on this journey? Let’s see what God has in store for each of us in this New Year.
