Oral Health

Can anyone else relate to lying back in the dental chair during a routine cleaning and all of a sudden the hygienist hits a “hot” spot and your legs shoot up about 3 feet in the air?!! I don’t know about you, but I can say over the years, I’ve probably brushed my teeth inappropriately which may have contributed to my tooth enamel wearing away in some places. I wish I would have known then what I know now about oral health.  (My theory was if a little is good, brushing harder with a stiffer brush was better – NOT!)

Here are a few tips for better dental health:

  • Use a soft bristle toothbrush
  • Replace toothbrush monthly (bristles lose their softness and become damaging over time)
  • Brush gently (using your non-dominant hand if necessary)
  • Brush in a circular motion (not sawing back and forth)
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing (especially after eating acidic food)
  • Eat healthy, nutrient-rich foods low in sugar and carbs.

Oral health is being looked at more and more in the health community, and many disease symptoms may be caused by problems that begin in your mouth.
