The “Why” Behind Eating Nutrient Rich Food

Colleen and I frequently get asked the question, “Why do you choose to eat the foods you eat?” Well today we are going to attempt to answer that question in a very simple scientific way.

On your plate
When we catch a cold or get a cut, our immune system is there to protect us (keep us healthy) from anything foreign that is trying to invade our body. If damage occurs from a foreign invader, our immune system is there to help in the healing process. Our bodies also have antibodies that are sent in to fight off these foreign invaders (antigens). Once it fights off an antigen (like a virus, bacteria, fungi or parasite), it keeps a memory of that antigen, and the next time, it is ready to combat the foreign invader immediately.

Problems arise when the immune system starts to produce antibodies that attack the healthy cells. Often times, our bodies recognize it is attacking its own body, and it stops. But what if it doesn’t? This can then lead to autoimmune disorders, cancer or inflammation. A part of the immune system’s job is to help hold these antibodies in check and make sure they are doing their jobs correctly.

In order for our immune system to work properly, it needs large amounts of nutrients (daily). And how can you ensure you are getting these nutrients? By choosing the most nourishing foods possible. These foods include organic fruits and vegetables, non-irradiated herbs and spices, grass-fed meat, free-range poultry and eggs, raw dairy products, fermented foods, raw honey and mineral-packed sea salt. Eating these nutrient rich foods, soaking up some sun and getting lots of sleep, can ensure we are getting the crucial nutrients our immune system needs to attack foreign invaders and help avoid chronic disease.
